My Garden of Words

My Garden of Words

I have always loved to write, mostly stories and article-type things, with the occasional poem thrown in for good measure! Writing comes easily to me, and poems are generally not thought out...they arrive "pre-formed" in my head, and I just write them down as soon as they pop in there! I have never spent more than 10 minutes on a poem...to me, they are spontaneous outpourings of thoughts and emotion. Most of my poetry doesn't rhyme either...I much prefer the freedom that free verse allows. But since joining the Literary Garden, I've discovered that I'm writing more rhyming type of poems. I'm writing more poetry period.

Tita Scorpio, from my WOSIB Literary Garden group (whose work you will find located elsewhere on this site) summed it up perfectly for me.

"I prefer alliteration more than sing song rhyme; sometimes when poems rhyme too neatly they have a "Hallmark card" effect on me. But that's just me-I don't like easy sentiment. I love free verse though : )   My son says that a poem isn't a poem unless it rhymes! lol Actually, I think that a poem is any personal expression of a thought, feeling, belief, experience and/or idea, expressed through a careful selection of minimal words that captures a moment of being and conveys it in a pattern of metered rhyme, alliteration and/or free verse."

Well said!
I just love the way she sums up how I also feel about non-rhyming poetry.
